Single Girl Serving: Overnight oats
Whether it be a 9 am class or your Saturday morning work shift that came too fast, mornings can be hectic. Rare are the days I leave the house feeling put together and ready for the day. Later in the day when I open Instagram and scroll past the countless pictures of famous bloggers and their beautiful smoothie bowls or magazine worthy shots of their eggs benedict in their all white kitchens, I can’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy.
But let’s be honest, we can’t all live an Instagram worthy life every morning. My morning routine usually involves me waking up with pillow marks tattooed on my face and the cute Victoria’s Secret nighty I fell asleep in tangled around my neck slightly closing off my airways and me being thankful there is no man in my life to see me like this. After gathering myself I go to make a green tea; because that is a healthy adult thing to do, which I will inevitably forget about and end up drinking cold. After spending a little too long admiring myself in the mirror, and after getting ready and then changing my outfit 15 and a half times, I realize I was supposed to be out the door five minutes ago. Breaking a sweat as I run to my car I realize I forgot the most important part of this morning routine, eating.
Pretending like I am not hungry, I drive to school telling myself I will just grab a salad from the cafeteria before my afternoon class. However, when lunchtime rolls around I could eat a small child and not feel bad about it. So like every other day I find myself in the line at Mucho Burrito justifying that it’s okay because it’s not a burger.
I realized that this lifestyle was becoming an issue; burritos aren’t cheap. So being an avid Pinterest user I set out to do some research and I find the perfect solution – overnight oats. These super simple and delicious to go breakfasts are the way to make your mornings a little less hectic. And they are cute enough to Instagram, tricking everyone into thinking you have your life together when really your mom still books your doctor appointments and you haven’t been to the dentist in three years.
What you’ll need:
- A container
- ½ cup of oats
- ¾ cup of milk
- Your choice of toppings
Before going to bed combine the oats and milk in your choice of container. I bought a pack of Mason jars from the grocery store because they are cute and look great on Instagram. Leave your oats to set overnight. In the morning wake up and top however you desire. You can eat these warm or cold.
I like to warm mine up in the microwave for about a minute. I then add a teaspoon of brown sugar and break up a couple pieces of dark chocolate. After mixing that I will add in fresh cut strawberries and raspberries. You can put the lid back on, throw in your bag and eat on the go. Thanks to Pinterest, I can feel a little more prepared each morning, despite how much time I spend changing outfits.
